This summer, a serious algae outbreak threatened water supply to millions of people around the lakes of Taihu, Chaohu and Dianchi.
Since then, environmental authorities have taken strong action against companies with high water consumption and high amounts of pollutants. And more water treatment companies have been set up.
Participants gave suggestions on tackling the water issue.
Zhang Dawei, Vice-governor of Henan Province, said, "For the short term, some special environmental actions are proving effective. The construction of water-related infrastructure is also important. But for long term, we must improve the establishment of regulations."
"I think the public's participation is the most effective way to fight water pollution, because water issues are closely related to how people live."said Yu Xiaogang, director of Green Watershed, NGO.
China has set a goal to cut total pollutant emissions by 2 percent this year. Controlling water pollution is one of the most important parts. Resolving the crisis requires joint efforts from the government, enterprises and the public.
