Greeks protest over fire destruction

More than 10 thousand people have gathered outside the Greek Parliament to protest over widespread destruction by fires.Forest fires in the country have killed at least 64 people over the past six days.

Demonstrators blamed property developers for starting fires to clear legally protected forest areas for building. Six people have been charged with deliberately setting fires. The fire department says all the major blazes are receding overall.

But authorities remain on high alert in case of flare ups. A total of almost 280 thousand hectares of forest in Greece has gone up in smoke since the start of the year.
