US opposes Taiwan´s UN bid

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jiaochao has expressed China's appreciation for US opposition to Taiwan's referendum on joining the UN.

Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte told Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV that the referendum is a mistake and a step toward a declaration of independence by the island, which would alter the status quo.
