German Chancellor Angela Merkel says that Germany will not give in to demands made by the Taliban to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan. She says Germany will not allow itself to be blackmailed.

Meanwhile, a Taliban spokesman said militants killed two German hostages on Saturday after Berlin refused to meet its demands. The body of one of the two German nationals was transported to a police station in Kabul on Sunday. Doctors conducting a post-mortem concluded he died from a gunshot wound. German authorities cast doubt over the Taliban's reports.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says analysis suggests one of the German hostages is alive while the other died of "stress and strain".
