A new corridor has opened, linking Shenzhen in the mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The West Corridor began operations on Sunday after four years of construction. President Hu Jintao attended the opening ceremony.

Another major achievement in the cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland.

The opening ceremony of the West Corridor, was held at noon. Chinese President, Hu Jintao, Hong Kong Chief Executive, Donald Tsang, and other officials from the mainland and Hong Kong were in attendance.

Donald Tsang said, "The bridge enjoys a beautiful and elegant design. The two, cable-stayed bridge towers face each other. This creates a closer relationship between the residents of Hong Kong and Shenzhen for achieving prosperity."

Since its return to the motherland, Hong Kong's connection with the mainland is on the rise.

Shenzhen and Hong Kong had joined efforts to build this new project, easing pressure from existing ports.

Tang Jiangxuan, State councilor, said, "Its completion will lessen traffic between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region or, even the whole country. It bears a significance in promoting exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland."

Ahead of the ribbon-cutting ceremony the motorcades of President, Hu Jintao, experienced the convenience offered by the Shenzhen-Hong Kong West Corridor.

It is the fourth land route linking the mainland and Hong Kong.

And, the Shenzhen Port Bay road bridge, the main part of West Corridor project, stretches about five kilometers a ten minute drive.
