In Beijing, senior government officials and academics have praised Hong Kong's Basic Law. They were speaking at a seminar to mark the 10th anniversary of the regional law's implementation.

In a speech at Wednesday's seminar, China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, said what has happened proves that "one country, two systems" is workable and the Basic Law is sound and practical.

Wu Bangguo said, "The Basic Law as a constitutional law of the SAR covers a wide range of Hong Kong issues. But the fundamental principle is one country, two systems. Under the law, Hong Kong must uphold state sovereignty, exercise a high degree of autonomy and ensure prosperity and stability."

The HK SAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang says the Basic Law has laid a solid foundation for Hong Kong's economic and social development, and the improvement of people's livelihoods.

Donald Tsang said, "With the care and support of the motherland, we are confident that in the days to come, we will make Hong Kong an even better place"

At the seminar, members of the NPC Standing Committee and other Hong Kong representatives recalled major milestones in implementing the law over the past decade and foresaw an even brighter future for the SAR.

Leung Chun-Ying, governor Hong Kong Sar Executive Council, said, "As an inalienable part of the motherland, Hong Kong will definitely have a promising future. And as members of the big family of our country, we will work harder to develop both Hong Kong and the mainland."

Maria Tam Wai-Chu, member NPC Standing Committee, said, "People in Hong Kong are deeply touched by the motherland's adherence to the promise of one country, two systems. Whatever problems we have, the motherland will try to help."

In Hong Kong, residents are also paying attention to the anniversary of the law.

David M.H. Fong, vice president Chinese general chamber of commerce, said, "The basic law comes from the great idea of one country, two systems. It works to maintain the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong."

Leung Ga-Wei, Hong Kong resident, said, "Since the return, the law has been well implemented by the government, and we can feel that law is safeguarding our livelihoods."

The seminar ahead of the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return is significant in summing up.
