China has launched a communication satellite for Nigeria at its satellite center in South west China.

This is the first launch of its kind for Africa. And also the first time a foreign buyer has purchased a Chinese satellite and its launching service. The lift-off also marks the 98th flight of China's Long March series rockets.

Long March 3-B blasted off early Monday morning.

It was carrying a high-power communication satellite for Nigeria the Nigerian Communication Satellite, or NIGCOMSAT-1.

This is also the first communication satellite that China has launched for another country.

26 minutes after lift-off, the rocket and satellite were separated. And now the satellite has accurately entered the pre-set orbit.

Wei Qiang, deputy chief designer, China Academy of space technology, said, "It will take a week or so, five times of changing positions in orbit until the satellite can finally be fixed at a longitude of 42 degrees East. It then will require a two-month test in orbit before being handed over to Nigeria."

Nigeria is expected to put the satellite into use before the end of this year. It is expected to have a life span of fifteen years.

Some experts say the satellite will bring huge benefits to Africa.

Hammed Rufai, president Nigeria Communications Satellite Co., said, "The satellite program will help Africa build a telecommunications highway. Governmental departments can set up e-offices. Schools can realize long-distance education. Cities and the countryside can share medical resources."

Some experts estimate the satellite program will create over 150,000 jobs for Nigerians. And also save broadband users over 95 million US dollars a year.

It is also expected to play a key role in promoting the development of the digital economy in Nigeria as well as throughout Africa.
