Iran says it will actively cooperate with IAEA inspectors

Despite UN sanctions, Iran is continuing with its nuclear program, which it claims is only for peaceful use. Iran's Foreign Ministry says the country is actively cooperating with IAEA inspectors who are inspecting the uranium enrichment plant at Natanz.

Iran's Foreign Ministry says inspectors from the United Nations nuclear watchdog are preparing a report on the country's nuclear activities at the Natanz uranium enrichment plant.

A spokesman says the inspectors are keeping IAEA Chief Mohamed ElBaradei informed.

Also on Sunday Ahmad Fayyazbakhsh, the deputy head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization in charge of power plants, announced plans to build two more nuclear power plants, despite international pressures to curb its controversial nuclear programme.

He said the plants would be light-water reactors, each with the capacity to generate up to 1,600 megawatts of electricity.

Each plant would cost up to 1.7 billion US dollars and take up to 11 years to build.

Iran is already building a 40-megawatt heavy water reactor in Arak, central Iran, based on domestic technology.

It's also preparing to build a 360-megawatt nuclear power plant in Darkhovin, in the country's southwest.

The US and some of its allies accuse Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies.

Iran has insisted it has the right to develop nuclear power for peaceful use.
