Israel marks annual Holocaust Remembrance Day

Hundreds of people, including holocaust survivors, gathered at the central plaza at Yad Vashem for Sunday evening's ceremony, to mark the start of Israel's annual Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The event was attended by Israel's top leaders, foreign diplomats, holocaust survivors, overseas delegations and Israeli soldiers. The day, which commemorates the six million Jews killed by Nazis during the second World War, is observed from sundown Sunday to sundown Monday.

Across the country official memorial ceremonies will be held, sombre music will be played on the radio and historical documentaries and movies will be shown on national television. All places of entertainment were closed Sunday night.

On Monday, a two-minute siren will blare across the country at 10 in the morning to start the day-long ceremonies.
