Beijing standardizes English signs for Olympics

Beijing's Olympic Organizers are fixing English mistakes on signs throughout the city. The program is expected to cover all areas where English is frequently used--and often abused.

"Oil Gate," "Parking this way," "Export" and "Goods Return", are just some of the signs with incorrect or confusing English in Beijing. Awkward and strange translations can be found everywhere, including tourist attractions, bus stops, and supermarkets.

Measures were taken and solutions found as the city formulated guidelines for the use of English. Olympic organizers say standardized and corrected English signs will go up in Olympic venues, on roads, at scenic spots, commercial areas, restaurants, exhibition centers, and museums.

Liu Yang, deputy director Beijing speaks foreign languages prog. said, "Our guidelines have been created and polished by a panel of 35 experts, which is composed of eminent English Language scholars both from China and other English-speaking nations. All the new signs will be implemented by the end of 2007. "

Encouraging people to learn English and other foreign languages is also on Beijing's agenda. Organizers say some five million Beijingers are expected to be capable of speaking foreign languages to some degree when the Olympics begins next year.

Liu Yang said, "I think the Beijing Speaks Foreign Languages Program will greatly contribute to the Beijing Olympics and help build an international metropolis."

Organizers hope that when 600,000 foreign visitors arrive in Beijing for the Olympics all the signs will point to a pleasurable experience.
