Donald Tsang has overwhelmingly won re-election as chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Tsang said his government would do its utmost to push forward economic development, promote democracy, and consolidate Hong Kong's status as an international metropolis.

Donald Tsang and his only contender, lawyer and law maker Alan Leong arrived early.

Sunday's chief executive election began at 9 a.m. at the Asia World-Expo on Lantau Island in Hong Kong.

789 members of the 795-member Election Committee cast their secret ballots, and 772 valid votes were collected.

At about 11:50 a.m., Returning Officer Justice Barnabas Fung Wah announced the result.

Winning 80 percent of ballots, Tsang was declared the winner. At a press conference soon after, the re-elected chief executive said he would represent the interests of various sectors of society during his next term.

Donald Tsang said "In the next 5 years' time, I am very confident that under my leadership we'll get the job done!"

Tsang called the election a major step in Hong Kong's constitutional development and a success of the "one country, two systems" principle.

Tsang was elected for a two-year term as Hong Kong's chief executive in 2005 after his predecessor resigned citing health reasons. His new term of office will last until June, 2012.
