UK to set limits on greenhouse gas emissions

Britain has become the first country to propose legislation setting legally binding targets on greenhouse gas emissions. This comes as Britain steps up its campaign for a new global warming pact to succeed the Kyoto Protocol.

Prime Minister Tony Blair says the new draft Climate Change legislation is aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions at least 60 percent by 2050.

It also sets five-year carbon budgets to reach the target, and creates an independent monitoring committee to check annual progress. The draft bill also sets an interim target for carbon cuts of between 26 and 32 percent by 2020.

The bill will go through three months of public and parliamentary consultations before becoming law next year.
