6 candidates compete for Turkmenistan´s presidency

Turkmens went to the polls on Sunday, with six candidates competing for the country's presidency.

The election comes two months after former president Saparmurat Niyazov died of heart failure. Local media said more than 98 percent of registered voters had cast their ballots when polling stations closed at six p.m.

A candidate must get a simple majority of votes to win. Preliminary results are expected on Monday and official results will be released on Wednesday.
