Iran has condemned an attack by US-led forces on its consulate in Irbil, Iraq. It has also called for the immediate release of five men held after the raid.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini says American forces in Iraq should pay compensation for damage to the Iranian consulate. He demanded the five diplomats be released.

Mohammad Ali Hosseini said, "The American forces must free the five Iranian detainees soon and should never repeat similar actions in the future. They must compensate for the loss they have made to Iran's consulate building."

The five were arrested Thursday in a US raid in the northern Iraqi city. The US says the diplomats are linked to Revolutionary Guards that arm and fund Iraqi insurgents.

Meanwhile, Hosseini criticized US policies on Iran. He claims countries in the Middle East will choose friendship with Iran.

Mohammad Ali Hosseini said, "They must know that no coalition will be formed against Iran in the region and neighboring countries will not exchange their intimate and extensive relations with Iran for the incorrect and pro-war policies of the US."

Hosseini added Iran has not ceased its nuclear activities at the Natanz nuclear facility. However, he also emphasized the negotiations were not over.
