Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

Former Iraqi president Sadam Hussein has been buried in his native village of Uwja, near Tikrit, in northern Iraq. The burial happened less than 24 hours after the former president was executed for crimes against humanity.

The burial took place in Sadam's family plot near Tikrit, where his sons, Uday and Qusay, were buried. Saddam's body was flown to Tikrit by the US military. The chief of Saddam's Albu Nasir tribe, Ali al-Nida, received the body.

A statement from Saddam's family says the decision was based on private family reasons, as well as on security concerns in Iraq.

Earlier, Saddam's exiled daughter Raghd had asked for her father's body to be flown to Yemen for a temporary burial, then later transferred back to Iraq for a proper family ceremony.

An adviser to Iraq's Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki, says the government initially wanted Saddam to be buried in a secret location in Iraq. But the US opposed this, and the Uwja burial was decided upon after negotiations between the US and Iraqi governments.
