China's northern areas are experiencing significant snowfall. Beijing had its first big snow so far this winter. And other areas of north, east and central China have also been affected.

It's the first big snowfall for Beijing so far this winter. The snow began early on Saturday morning, blanketing the Chinese capital. It also delayed traffic during the morning rush hour.

Slippery roads caused traffic congestion and other hassles for many people on their way to work. Many are working over the weekend ahead of taking holidays during the first three days of the New Year.

The municipal administration commission sent cleaners and vehicles to sweep snow and spray snow-dissolving agents along major urban roads at dawn.

Some parts of major expressways in and out of the city have also been temporarily closed.

More than 100 flights were delayed at Beijing's Capital International Airport due to the snow.

Saturday also saw a big snowfall in Tianjin. The local government dispatched two thousand personnel to deal with traffic problems. Many expressways in Tianjin were closed.

Heavy snow fall also hit east China's Shandong and north China's Hebei provinces. The snow caused traffic problems, but temporary eased drought conditions.

According to the Central Metrological Observatory, more snow blizzards will move towards the west over the next few days, covering many areas in northwest China.
