UN peacekeepers in Darfur rejected to help end conflict

Sudan's UN ambassador has flatly ruled out any UN peacekeeping troops in Darfur to help end the escalating conflict.

Ambassador Abdal-mah-mood Abdal-haleem's comments came at the end of a Security Council meeting to discuss a letter from the Sudanese president to Kofi Annan. The letter supposedly endorsed the UN's three-step package. But the ambassador's statement raised questions about the Sudanese leader's commitment to Annan's plan for a combined force of African Union and United Nations troops.

The Sudanese Ambassador said the hybrid force must be smaller and have no UN peacekeepers in traditional blue helmets. He said only African troops supported by UN technical and logistics experts could take part.
