Chinese and Japanese academics have begun their first joint studies program, in an effort to improve ties between the two countries. The program will focus on the history between the two neighbors.

Twenty academics, 10 from each side, will meet for two days in Beijing beginning on Tuesday.

As well as ancient and medieval history, the scholars will examine the contentious area of modern history, when Japan invaded and occupied parts of China from 1931 to 1945.

The head of the Chinese delegation, Bu Ping, said no specifics would be discussed at the first meeting. This will be devoted to the working process, principles, and purposes of the joint venture.

The Foreign Ministry said China welcomes such dialogue, and reiterated that Japan has to face past atrocities committed in its name.

Qin Gang, Foreign Ministry spokesman, said, "One of the most important foundations for healthy and steady Sino-Japanese relations is to recognize and deal with history objectively. In the last century, Japan launched a war of aggression, which included the brutal Nanjing Massacre. No one can deny what is historical fact. "

The opening of the dialogue was agreed by Chinese President Hu Jintao and Japan's new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during a meeting in October.

The first round of the studies will conclude with a report in 2008. The program is expected to be held twice a year.
