Surgeon: Cuban leader Castro has no cancer

A Spanish surgeon who has just returned from treating Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Havana says Castro does not have cancer.

The Cuban leader has not appeared in public since undergoing surgery in July, prompting concerns about his health. But the chief surgeon of a Madrid hospital says Castro has a digestive condition, and is only recovering from a major operation.

Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, chief surgeon, said, "He is recovering from a series of problems arising from the very serious operation he had. His recovery process includes muscular and nutritional rehabilitation, and as I said before, one of the greatest problems encountered by the medical team is the restriction of his activity. His level of activity has always been known to be excellent and now of course the doctors want to restrict it but it is very difficult."
