The UN World Food Programme has started dropping food into Somalia and Kenya to assist more than a million people cut off by floods. Adding to concerns is the continuing war in Somalia, which could cause an influx of Somali refugees into Kenya.

Thus increasing the number of those seeking aid.

A UN chartered cargo aircraft dropped food for refugees in eastern Kenya and southern Somalia throughout the weekend. In eastern Kenya, more than 100,000 mainly Somali refugees were forced from their homes by flooding that began on November 10th.

Peter Smerdon, public Info. officer, said, "We are talking about people who are now threatened by regional war on top of the worst floods in years, which in themselves followed the worst drought in a decade. So it is a very difficult situation for them."

The World Food Programme aims to deliver 1-thousand tons of food and other assistance to villagers stranded by the flooding in the coming weeks.
