Trade is very much on the minds of senior Chinese and American officials at their first strategic economic dialogue in Beijing. But as the two high-ranking delegations sat down for talks, their vision is not just focused on business in the short term, but long-term relations.

These are trade talks at the very highest level.

Never before have China and the US seen so many senior economic officials meet at one place.

And for the event's 2-day's duration, they have a packed agenda.

"This dialogue is to discuss global, strategic and long term issues concerning our economic development. We'll also talk about plans for enhancing bilateral trade. Trade cooperation is the major topic for Sino-US economic relations. " Said Wu Yi, Chinese vice primier.

Broadly, the topics for discussion will include the United States' trade deficit with China , the international value of China's currency - RENMINBI, and the protection of intellectual property right.

As special representatives of their Presidents, China's Vice Premier Wu Yi and US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, are both charged with ensuring their respective national interests and priorities are top of the agenda.

The dialogue mechanism is designed to allow bi-annual meetings to be held in the two national capitals. And the hope is that more talk will bring shared benefits to all and sundry.
