Outgoing U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has paid a surprise visit to troops stationed in Iraq over the weekend. He says US forces should not quit the war until the enemy is defeated.

On Saturday, Rumsfeld visited troops at the Al-Asad air base in Anbar Province. He made a speech to over 1,200 soldiers and Marines, saying it was a privilege to serve with them. Rumsfeld also visited U.S. forces in Balad, 80 kilometers north of Baghdad. This was Rumsfeld's 15th trip to Iraq since the war began. December 17th will be his last full day as Secretary of Defense. After that he will be replaced by Robert Gates.
