In the US Leaders of a bipartisan panel on Iraq have defended their call for a new war strategy. They say a diplomatic solution is necessary to make progress in Iraq.

Speaking on a Sunday talk show, former Republican US Secretary of State James Baker said a political approach was needed to resolve the conflict. Especially since the US would not "win" the war "militarily". Baker said national reconciliation was at the heart of a solution. Co-chairman of the Iraq Study Group, former Democratic Representative Lee Hamilton, echoed Baker's words. He says America should use more than the military to achieve an effective result in Iraq. And that a comprehensive approach is key to the process.
