South Korea has reported a second outbreak of bird flu within a week. This occurred at a poultry farm in Iksan, 230 kilometers south of Seoul.

The new outbreak is just three kilometers away from the first outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu confirmed on Saturday. South Korea's veterinary officials said test results showed the newly reported cases was caused by a highly contagious strain of bird flu virus. But they also say they need more time to confirm whether the virus is the deadly H5N1 strain.

Animal rights supporters expressed concern after an official from Iksan city said dogs bred on farms for consumption would be slaughtered. International experts have also questioned the necessity of killing non-poultry species.
