The UN Security Council has approved a plan for a special international court to try suspects in the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The move by the 15-nation council comes in the form of a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. It clears the way for the plan to be submitted to the Lebanese government for its formal approval. The letter was prepared by Peru's Ambassador to the UN, who is also the security council's president for November.
