China India celebrate friendship year

Special Report:   Hu visits 4 Asian nations

Ahead of their talks on Tuesday, visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Indian counterpart, Abdul Kalam, attended a ceremony to celebrate the Sino-Indian Friendship Year.

During his speech, President Hu Jintao noted that the friendly exchanges between the two countries date back to ancient times.over two thousand years ago. And the influence of both the Chinese and Indian civilizations has been profound and far-reaching on each other's country.

Hu Jintao also said that in recent years, the cultural exchanges between the two countries have been frequent and fruitful. He added that both governments agreed to designate 2006 as the Sino-Indian Friendship Year. Hu Jintao says this is in line with the aspiration of the two peoples to strengthen their traditional friendship and deepen bilateral cooperation.

The Chinese President also says the series of activities held during the year has helped to push Sino-Indian ties to a new level.

Hu said:"China-Indian relations have reached new historic heights. Let's join hands and step forward together in writing a new chapter in Sino-Indian friendship. And usher in a brighter future for the two countries and their peoples. "
