The Chinese and US navies have wrapped up a search-and-rescue exercise on the South China Sea. Both sides say the drill has brought their military cooperation to a higher level.

It was a rare get-together for the two navies as four Chinese and US ships attempted to rescue a vessel from danger.

Two Chinese destroyers conducted the search. Patrol aircraft soon located their target, and the rescue teams made full speed ahead.

The American side led the rescue operation putting out the fire and providing repairs and medical treatment.

The operation was praised for its substantial results.

Lieutenant commander of Juneau Nathan Moyer said: "Definitely, something that could happen in real life. But at the same time, it gave our two navies a wonderful opportunity to work together to solve a problem in a truly joined environment. "

The two sides also conducted communication and fleet formation exercises.

The result? Greater interaction through better understanding.

Yan Yuejin, from South China sea fleet, said: "We have learned more about the ways the US navy operates in a joint rescue drill. We have enhanced our mutual trust and cooperation."

Military cooperation between the two sides used to be limited to visits and consultations.

This drill adds a new momentum, and injects concrete into their relationship.

Qian Lihua, from Chinese Defense Ministry, said: "We hope the Chinese and American armies will expand cooperation in various fields. We'll work with the American side to push our coordination onto higher grades."

The two navies have spent nearly a decade building up cooperation. The first stage of the exercise was held in September, and Sunday saw the drill's successful conclusion.
