Special Report:   Hu visits 4 Asian nations

Earlier at the APEC meeting, Chinese President Hu Jintao called for the promotion of common development, harmony and progress in the Asia-Pacific region.

Chinese President Hu Jintao noted that unprecedented opportunities for development are now at hand, but there are still many problems and challenges facing the Asia-Pacific region.

He said this means APEC members need to work together to promote common development, harmony and progress, in order to benefit people in the region and contribute more to world peace and development.

To meet this goal, President Hu Jintao put forward four proposals.

First, maintain peace and stability, because a peaceful and stable environment is a prerequisite for development.

Second, promote common development, because imbalance in regional development remains, despite stunning success.

Third, boost win-win cooperation, as the most effective response to existing challenges like high energy prices, is increased cooperation.

Fourth, be open and inclusive, as diversity is an important driving force for progress in human civilization.

In addition, the Chinese President also said APEC has seen fruitful cooperation, and boosted economic growth in the region and among its members.

But he stressed that in the changing international and regional situation, APEC should play a bigger role in backing a multilateral trade system, and enhancing economic and technical cooperation in the region and the world as a whole.
