Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

The top US commander in the Middle East is warning the US Congress against setting a timetable for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. General John Abizaid made the comments at a hearing held by the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The next chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Carl Levin, said the administration must tell Iraq that US troops will begin withdrawing in four to six months, in order to force them to take more responsibility. General John Abizaid disagreed.

General John Abizaid, top commander in mid-east said, “At this stage in the campaign we will need flexibility to manage our force and to help manage the Iraqi force. Force caps and specific timetables limit that flexibility.”
