US military aid to Lebanon

The US has signed a multi-million US dollar deal to supply Lebanon's army with military equipment for the first time in a quarter of a century.

US Assistant Defense Secretary Peter Rodman says the aid is aimed at helping Lebanon extend its sovereignty over all of its territory. And also to help Lebanon protect its borders, following the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel in July and August. The agreement is part of a US pledge to supply Lebanon with more than 40 million US dollars in assistance... including Humvees, military trucks and ammunition. This, as well as training and essential parts and repairs for all types of military equipment. The US aid comes just months after a truce with Israel went into effect... and the Lebanese army was deployed into the southern part of the country.
