European reaction

Elsewhere in the world, Europe welcomed the verdict but some are saying Saddam Hussein should not be put to death.

The Finnish presidency of the European Union maintained its longstanding position of opposing the death penalty.

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, said that the verdict was important.

Britain has also welcomed the verdict as "the ultimate expression of the sovereignty of Iraq". This, despite being officially opposed to capital punishment.

Italian Prime Minister, Romano Prodi, said the verdict against Saddam was justified. But added that Italian tradition and principles were against the death penalty.
