With some US support, Iraqi forces should be able to take full control of security in the country within the next 12 to 18 months.

That's according to the top US commander in Iraq, General George Casey. His remarks come as US forces face their deadliest month of fighting in Iraq this year, with 89 combat casualties so far. Casey adds that the US military should continue to focus on drawing down forces in the country. But he also said he would ask for more troops if he felt they were necessary. The US Ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, says the Iraqi government has agreed to set out a progress timeline by the end of the year. Khalilzad also called on the US to redouble its efforts if it wanted success in Iraq.
