Yan'an is famous mainly for the old cave houses at Yangjialing. Chairman Mao Zedong and other leaders of the Chinese Communist Party once lived here for about 10 years. It was in this simply furnished residence that Chairman Mao devised strategies for the Chinese army.
A large number of tourists from home and abroad come to retrace the historical trails every year. The booming tourist industry has meant a lot to the time-honored city.
Wei Shibin, office director of Yan’an Tourist Bureau said, “We have rich Red Travel resources. During the past 10 years, we've received more than 5 million people, with the tourist revenue totaling 2.3 billion Yuan. Now we have a total of 32 travel agencies. Tourism has become one of the pivotal industries in the city.”
The 70th anniversary of the Long March victory this year is raising the profile of revolutionary cities across the country. And Yan'an's tourist industry is hoping it will bring a modern-day army of visitors.
