UN Security Council members have reached tentative agreement on a Japanese-drafted statement. It warns the Democratic People's Republic of Korea of unspecified consequences if it carries a nuclear test.

The statement urges Pyongyang to cancel its planned test and immediately return to six-party talks. The DRPK said Tuesday that it's preparing its first nuclear test. Meanwhile, on Thursday, the US played down an earlier warning, saying it was not threatening Pyongyang with "lethal" action. US officials say the test could happen in the next few days, possibly on Sunday.
