China and Kazakhstan have finished the first phase of a joint anti-terrorism exercise. The three-day drill, code-named "Tianshan-One", is the first between the law enforcement bodies and special forces of the two countries.

The first phase of Tianshan-One was a major anti-terrorism maneuver. Joint law enforcement and security forces from both nations had to handle a simulated incursion by international terrorists. A variety of operations were practiced along the borders near Kazakhstan's eastern Almaty region.

Minister of Public Security Zhang Chongde said:"This joint exercise showcased the anti-terror ability of the two countries' law enforcement and security bodies. It also represents the cooperation and friendship between China and Kazakhstan."

Observers from Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan are monitoring the drill. A second phase will begin on Saturday in Xinjiang.
