Hu Jintao joins PLA delegation

President Hu Jintao joined lawmakers from the People's Liberation Army in group discussions at the annual session of the National People's Congress. Hu Jintao, also Chairman of the Central Military Commission, called on the military and the defense sector to develop speedily and healthily.
Hu Jintao urged the country's armed forces to earnestly perform their historic mission in the new century and enhance their capabilities to cope with crises, safeguard peace, prevent war and win wars if they occur.
Hu Jintao pointed out that the "11th Five Year" is not only a crucial period in China's efforts to build a well-off society, but also an important stage in the development of the military and national defense. He called on the military to correctly understand the situation and enhance its sense of political responsibility. Hu Jintao directed the military to always place the task of defending national sovereignty and security above all else, to accelerate military reform with Chinese characteristics, and guarantee the smooth building of a comparatively well-off society in China.
Hu Jintao told delegates that his predecessor Jiang Zemin's guidelines and a scientific view of development should be adopted in all aspects and all stages of national defense and military building, and pushing forward the military's revolutionization, modernization and regularization process. The President also underlined the necessity to coordinate and balance the country's economic development and national defense building. He urged the military to join civilian sectors in the development of the economy, science, education and human resources.
Hu Jintao emphasized that science and technology are a huge force that will enable the fast and healthy development of national defense and the military. He stressed the need to arm the military with modern technology as part of building an innovative country. Hu Jintao also said the country's military system and its management should be further reformed in ways suitable for conditions in China.
