Quake victims rebuild houses

To help these villagers, the local governments put the utmost efforts into road construction, fund raising, and procurement of building materials. A few villages have been completely removed from the mountains.

Wen Xiaogui, Director of Hongbai Town Council, said, "Thirty five thousand yuan are granted to each family of four. we provide twenty-thousand, and rest is from the province which provide regular assistance."

But this is far from enough for Mr. Jin, who lost everything in the earthquake. He is reluctant to ask the bank for a loan. The new site of his house is right beside the road, and he was told to complete it as others, otherwise the village will lose face.

Mr. Jin, from Tianbao village, said, "I am the last one start building new houses. that means I will have a large amount of debt. and I will have to spend years to pay it back."

Whatever the difficulties, new houses are put up everyday. Nearly 90 percent of the victims have started rebuilding their houses in Shifang, and more than a half of them have been completed.

The survivors say this is also a sort of blessing for their lost relatives.
