China
Kang Houming -- Migrant worker deputy
WATCH VIDEO
Kang Houming said, "The migrant workers have a problem. Their insurance ends once they lose their jobs and return home. During this session, many deputies have let me know what measures should be taken to settle the issue."
To date, more than two hundred million farmers have migrated to urban areas for work. These people and their families make up nearly a third of the country's population.
The welfare of these people tops the concerns of the government.
As their representative, Kang says he doesn't mind talking to the media and getting the word out.
Kang Houming said, "Some of my fellow workers don't know how to protect their own interests, due to their education and experience. So my mission here in the session is not only let people know what we are doing, but also to bring back useful information to encourage my fellow workers."
Kang says the education of migrant workers' children is also a difficult issue both in big and small cities, and he's included this in his proposal.
Kang told reporters that having such meetings is much more exhausting than his usual job building roads. But it's worth it when his proposals and suggestions are taken into consideration.
Millions of migrant workers who are struggling for their livelihood are among the most vulnerable people at present. Fortunately, though, they have the attention of the entire country. Their voices can be heard, and their fate is closely linked with that of the nation. All these factors help turn their worries into conviction.
