Lawmakers review draft food safety law

China's current food safety system involves at least five departments, including industry and commerce administration, as well as food and drug supervision.

The draft also stipulates that monitoring departments or institutions responsible for testing food quality are not allowed to recommend products to consumers through advertisements or other means. Meanwhile, social groups or individuals are not allowed to recommend substandard products to consumers.

Yao Jiannian, member of NPC Standing committee, said, "They shall take joint liabilities if they are involved in spreading or making false advertisements, or in promoting substandard food products in advertisements. "
