On the army side, a military spokesman DENIED that soldiers fired shells into the safe zone. The spokesman also said the army had not targeted civilians during any of the fighting in recent operations.
He also attributed any reported civilian casualties to rebels dressed in civilian clothing. OR to civilians being pressed into service by insurgents to build fortifications.
Last week, the government established the "safe zone" in the rebel-held territory near Mullaittivu. It also urged all civilians to move into the area where they would be protected. But there have been several reports of artillery fire in the area.
