The tourism industry has been hit hard in India's eastern city of Bodhgaya, with the influx of foreign tourists slowing down to a trickle due to the economic slowdown and the Mumbai terror attacks. |
Ramji Singh, Restaurant Owner, said, "Once, we used to earn enough money in three months to last us an entire year. But now business is scarce. The situation is so bad that we have to invest our own money just to keep going."
Suresh Singh, Travel Agent, said, "The economic slowdown is one factor behind the slump in tourism. The Mumbai attacks have also had a major impact on the influx of tourists."
It's the first time in the past ten years that India's faced such a situation.
Tourism contributes more than 6 percent to the country's GDP, and employs 53 million people directly or indirectly.
