Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert praised Sarkozy's role in bolstering Franco-Israeli ties.
Olmert said, "The relationship between Israel and France during the last six decades has seen ups and downs. Under your leadership this friendship has started to blossom and prosper again, while ties and mutual interests are being strengthened."
Sarkozy stressed that recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of both Israel and a Palestinian state is a condition for peace in the region.
He also called on Israel to end its settlement activity in East Jerusalem and the West Bank saying there will be no peace without a solution to the problem of the Palestinian refugees.
Sarkozy will also make a brief stop in Bethlehem to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
