Urgent rescue and evacuation work in China

Working staff give drinking water to passengers once stranded in Beijng-Zhuhai expressway, who are now settled in Xiangtan City, in Hunan Province, south China, Jan. 29, 2008. Due to the closure of the expressway linking Beijing with Zhuhai in south China's Guangdong Province a week ago, more than 20,000 vehicles with 60,000 people were stranded near Hunan's Xiangtan City. Hunan Province carried out urgent rescue and evacuation work on Tuesday. Up to 12 a.m. on Jan. 29, the stranded vehicles were decreased to 6,400 with about 20,000 people on board. (Xinhua Photo) |
