Shimon Peres, Israeli President, said, "There is a very simple solution to the situation in Gaza if the situation is so bad: let the Hamas stop shooting and there won't be fire and there won't be problems."
The EU and UN have both called on Israel to allow immediate supplies of fuel and medicine to pass to the Gaza Strip's 1.5 million residents.
EU security chief Javier Solana said the situation was only adding to the Palestinians' suffering there.
Javier Solana, EU security chief, said, "People are suffering and I think it can be done that both things can be maintained: at the same time to defend against terrorist acts but not to make life of ordinary people suffering more than what they are suffering already."
But for the Palestinians on the street, the warmth of the candles is all they have.
