Hamas denied involvement and condemned the attack. They said the assailants were undermining Palestinian interests by creating chaos and confusion.

Fawzi Barhoum, Hamas spokesman, said, "We have condemned this crime and we are saying it is inhuman."

Dozens have been killed in Gaza' escalating lawlessness since Hamas defeated Fatah in January parliamentary elections. Some say the death of the children is likely to trigger widespread confrontations. And it comes at a time when Hamas and Fatah are at loggerheads over the creation of a national unity government.
