45 killed in Peru bus crash

In Peru, a bus speeding through fog on a twisting mountain road plunged 400 meters into a gorge, killing 45 people.

The accident occurred late on Monday nearly 900 kilometers south of Lima, along the border with Bolivia. Only the bus driver and a five-year-old boy survived. Both were hospitalized in Puno city for treatment of minor injuries. A police spokesman said initial reports indicated that the accident occurred because of bad weather and speeding. Police said the bus was a makeshift vehicle, one of hundreds of buses in Peru illegally grafted onto the chassis of flatbed trucks.
