中央歌剧院合唱团的前身是原中央歌剧院歌剧团合唱队。自五十年代初中央实验歌剧院建院开始，就一直活跃在歌剧艺术和合唱艺术两个领域里。
在歌剧方面，曾参与排演了多部中国歌剧，如《王贵与李香香》、《刘胡兰》、《草原之歌》、《春雷》、《望夫云》、《阿依古丽》、《南海长城》、《护花神》、《第一百个新娘》、《军民进行曲》、《马可?波罗》等。同时也参与排演了多部外国著名歌剧，有《茶花女》、《蝴蝶夫人》、《青年近卫军》、《货郎与小姐》、《叶甫根尼?奥涅金》、《费加罗的婚礼》、《卡门》、《艺术家的生涯》、《小丑》、《驯悍记》、《弄臣》、《图兰多》等。1987年还参与制作了美国音乐剧《乐器推销员》和《异想天开》。以上部分剧目曾作为优秀剧目获文化部颁发的多项奖励。
在排演歌剧的同时，合唱团还经常参加各种音乐会和大型文艺晚会的演出，近年来，合唱团多次演出了一些经典的大型合唱作品，如《黄河大合唱》、贝多芬第九交响曲和威尔第的《安魂曲》等。
中央歌剧院合唱团曾随剧院多次出访，1989年至1992年，合唱团曾两度赴日本演出歌剧《魔笛》，被日本评论界誉为“强力合唱团”。
1998年，合唱团与世界著名艺术家合作在澳门艺术节上演出了歌剧《假面舞会》，1999年初，又在澳门文化中心落成开幕式上参加了歌剧《漂泊的荷兰人》的演出，均获得了很大的成功。
The Central Opera Chorus has developed on the basis of its predecessor The Central Experimental Opera Troupe. Ever since its founding in early 1950s, the chorus has made its presence favorably felt in the performing art of opera and chorus in China.
Over the years the chorus has been involved in the performance of numerous Chinese works of opera, including Wan Gui and Li Xiangxiang, Liu Hulan, The Song of Prairie, The Spring Thunder, The Cloud of Missing Husband, Ayiguli, The Great Wall of the Southern Sea, The Patron Gods of Flowers, The 100th Bride, The march of Army and People, Marco Polo. Among its repertoire are also such western masterpieces as La Traviara, Madame Butterfly, The Bartered Bride, Eugene Onegin, The Marriage of Figaro, Carmen, La Boheme, Pagliacci, The Taming of the Shrew, Rigoletto, Turandot, etc. It also helped to put on Chinese stage in 1987 two American Musicals. With its great achievement in art the chorus enjoys great prestige among both professionals and audience and has won multiple awards from the Ministry of Culture.
Apart from operas, the chorus has also appeared in various concerts and galas, among which the New Year Concert, and performances to mark the national events of special significance are not the least. Its performance of The Yellow River Cantata, Beethoven's Symphony No.9, and Verdi's Requiem in recent years has received acclaims both inside and outside China. As impressive as its domestic performances are the chorus's overseas tours. Its performance of The Magic Flute in Japan in 1989 and 1992 respectively earned itself the reputation of "power chorus" from Japanese music critics. Its achievement in Macao Art Festival includes the performance of The Magic Flute, 1998, in cooperation with internationally recognized virtuosi and the participation in the performance of Masque at the opening ceremony of the 1999 Festival. Both events proved to be great success and were well received by the audience and media.
