BEIJING, May 6 -- Bed bugs are tough to eradicate and can produce a wide range of reactions, although serious reactions are rare and there is little evidence that they spread disease, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Here is some information about bed bugs:

They are found worldwide in temperate and tropical climates.

They feed on bats, birds and mammals.

Adult bed bugs are oval shaped, flat, about 5 mm long, and resemble unfed ticks or small cockroaches. They are easily visible to the naked eye.

According to the researchers, while transmission of over 40 diseases has been attributed to bed bugs, there is scant evidence that they are transporters of any communicable diseases.

Clinical reactions to bed bug bites include a variety of skin reactions and, rarely, systemic reactions. Typically, a bite produces anything from no reaction to a barely visible mark at the site of the bite. The most common reactions for which medical attention is sought is the presence of lesions, which can itch but usually resolve within a week.

A few patients experience complex skin reactions, however. Various treatments have been used for bed bug bites, and it remains unclear which are most effective. Effective eradication strategies also remain elusive.
