For the city Fushun, the past 30 years have resulted in a rebirth of its industries.

The city was already a major industrial base for the country - and is now getting stronger. By the end of last year, there were 4,279 industrial enterprises in the city, 4.1 times that in 1978. Its industrial output value was 97.92 billion yuan, 21 times the amount in 1978.

Yet the proportion of industrial output of gross domestic production has continued to fall thanks to the rise of service sector. In 1978, industries took up 77.9 percent of the total. Last year the figure was 50 percent.

Although the ratio of heavy and light industries remains about the same, the industrial structure has been adjusted and improved.

State-owned enterprises renewed

State-owned enterprises, the pride of the city once, fell into disarray in the 1990s and many went bankrupt. The new millennium brought them hope.

The government and industrial associations worked out detailed plans for each and consolidated all of them. Other shareholders, including private holders and corporate groups, were brought in from other areas to inject life into Fushun.

The careful moves paid off recently, as a number of restructured State-owned enterprises had seen rapid growth since 2005.

Changes in industrial structure

Fushun industries grew from the coal sector. Over the years the city has evolved from resource-based economy to deep processing industries.

Apart from traditional sectors in chemicals, non-ferrous metals, power, equipment and building materials, refined processing has spread to the oil, steel, stone and plastic sectors.

Last year, deep processing of natural resources totaled more than 34.53 billion yuan, up 15.3 percent over the year previous.

Thanks to restructuring, the enterprises are growing in scale as well.

Strengthened competitive power of local businesses

Last year, the city had 58 large and medium-sized enterprises, including China Petrol Fushun Petrochemical Co and Fushun New Iron and Steel Ltd.

More and more industrial enterprises from the city are exploring overseas markets as well. Last year, 68 enterprises here exported their products. Among the top exporting sectors are metallurgy, equipment manufacturing, oil processing, coke and coal processing, non-metal ore processing and craftwork.
