Special Report:   High Level Int'l FS Forum

In Beijing a major forum on food safety has just opened. Government officials and delegates from around the world are meeting in Beijing to share their expertise and hammer out ways to further strengthen the industry.

The High Level International Food Safety Forum aims to share information and expertise on food safety, and promote the healthy development of trade in food, including agricultural products.

Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi addressed participants, saying China has always given high priority to food safety control, and achieved a great deal in the area. A survey conducted in the first half of the year shows more than 90 percent of Chinese food products meeting national safety standards.

Wu Yi said "We're strong against people who are biased in how they see food safety issues. We oppose those who want to use this issue to set up trade barriers, even politicizing the food safety issue."

The Vice-premier says China is willing to work together with other countries to safeguard global food safety. She's called for more international cooperation and information exchange.

Over 200 senior officials and 14 international organizations from 43 countries are participating in this event.
